Exempt Organizations Group Hosts Nonprofit Leaders

October 6, 2014, Caplin & Drysdale

Caplin & Drysdale's Exempt Organizations Group – in association with WMACCA – hosted a full house of nonprofit leaders on October 1, 2014 for a thought-provoking, half-day workshop, "Wearing Multiple Hats: Common Challenges for GCs Advising Related Organizations." Caplin attorneys led the discussions and shared their expertise regarding the complex web of legal, business and ethical challenges facing in-house lawyers who serve multiple entities. Speakers included Marcus S. Owens (former Head of the Exempt IRS Organizations Division), Diara M. Holmes, Brendan M. Wilson, Michael W. Durham, Sharon W. Nokes, William M. Klimon, William D. Fournier, and Christopher S. Rizek.  Several panels also featured in-house advisors who shared their experiences and insight--including Cindy Lewin, General Counsel of AARP; Katherine Karl, Deputy General Counsel of American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network; and Jami Wyatt, Senior Counsel at AARP.

Workshop Chair Diara M. Holmes described the event as exactly what Caplin & Drysdale and WMACCA hoped it would be. "It was our privilege to host such a rich conversation with this incredible group of nonprofit leaders. We all came away with a greater appreciation for the challenge of ensuring legal compliance while staying true to each organization's mission and business reality."
