Scott Michel Comments on Charles Rettig, Nominee to Head IRS

President Donald Trump's nominee to head the Internal Revenue Service, Charles Rettig, is a prominent, 61-year-old tax lawyer who is highly rated for his legal ability. But he also has widely touted people skills which will prove even more important to jumpstarting the agency's relationship with Congress and recharging employee morale.

"He's a real patriot," said Scott Michel, a partner at Caplin & Drysdale and a close friend of Rettig. Instead of gifts, "he sends me a letter saying, 'You've contributed to Wounded Warriors.' "

At legal seminars, he will often ask at lunch for those with active duty service members in their families to raise their hands, and he'll pay for their meals. At one annual Tax Law Controversy Institute at UCLA, which he has chaired since 1997, he organized contributions that produced two pallets of toys for US Marines to distribute before Christmas.
