Danaher CEO Larry Culp Honors Longtime Board Member Mortimer Caplin

May 8, 2013, Caplin & Drysdale

Below are remarks made by Danaher CEO H. Lawrence Culp, Jr., in recognition of Mortimer M. Caplin's retirement from service on Danaher's Board of Directors.

"[…]Mort has served on Danaher's Board of Directors since 1990, helping lead our company through nearly two and a half decades of immense growth and change.  I would like to pause today to recognize the life-long commitment and determination that drove Mort's accomplished career as an academic, public servant, legal practitioner and businessperson.  Mort earned both his Bachelor's and Law degrees from the University of Virginia. As a student, he excelled academically and engaged in many leadership roles as an athlete and editor of the law review. Upon graduation in 1940, he clerked for Judge Armistead M. Dobie on the United States Court of Appeals, and subsequently joined a law firm in New York.

After only a year on the job, Mort's career was interrupted as he was called to military service in World War II. He proactively enlisted in the United States Navy, served on the initial landing force in Normandy in 1944, and was ultimately received into the French Legion of Honor. After the war, Mort returned to his legal career and, a few years later, returned to the University of Virginia as a law professor concentrating on tax and corporate law.

In 1962, he was again called into public service by President John F. Kennedy, this time to head the Internal Revenue Service. After retiring from that post, he received the Alexander Hamilton Award - the highest honor bestowed by the Treasury Department. Thereafter, he founded Caplin & Drysdale which became and remains one of the leading tax firms in the United States.

Mort has been an inspiration to all who have had the privilege of working with him. In his 2005 commencement address at the University of Virginia's law school, Mort conveyed two philosophies that I believe we have worked to embody as a company:

"First, avoid fixed and rigid plans. Instead, allow for flexibility, innovation and possible change –
but always hold true to your personal values.
Second, be willing to accept risk when necessary as you move forward toward your goals."

Danaher has been the lucky beneficiary of Mort Caplin's remarkable knowledge, experience and leadership and these lessons will continue to personally motivate me, and Danaher, long after his retirement.

Please join me in thanking and honoring Mort for his years of dedicated service to our company.
