New York Law Journal Quotes Jeffrey Liesemer on Purdue Pharma Case

October 14, 2021, New York Law Journal

U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Robert Drain of the Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York on Thursday denied a motion from opponents of the $4.3 billion Purdue Pharma bankruptcy settlement to route their appeal directly to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit.

The case is set to proceed before U.S. District Judge Colleen McMahon of the Southern District of New York, who has set an expedited schedule with the first brief due Oct. 22 and oral arguments on Nov. 30.

. . .

Jeffrey Liesemer of Caplin & Drysdale, who opposed the motion as counsel for the multi-state governmental entities group, noted that his clients had not heard any signal that the Second Circuit would expedite the case, while McMahon had made it clear that the matter would be on a fast-track in her courtroom.

“We all know that Judge McMahon has set a full-day oral argument for November 30,” Liesemer said. “She’s keenly aware of the significance of this case and the importance of timing.”
