Jim Lee, deputy chief of the IRS Criminal Investigation division, will take over as chief when Don Fort retires at the end of September.

Lee, a 25-year CI veteran, will take charge of the division on October 1, according to an August 3 IRS announcement.

Former CI Chief Mark E. Matthews, now with Caplin & Drysdale, told Tax Notes that he was “very pleased to see the selection of another strong veteran agent as chief, especially one with Jim’s breadth of experience in the field and at headquarters.”

The IRS announcement didn’t say who would take over as CI deputy chief.
